They might have been only 2 years old in the Pro Kabaddi League, but it feels like Gujarat Fortune Giants have been playing in the league for ages. Afterall, the Ahmedabad-based franchise has made it to the final ofPKLin both attempts, in 2017 and 2018. While they have failed to cross the final hurdle earlier, can the Giants be third time lucky in 2019? Here is everything you need to know about Gujarat Fortune Giants:

Gujarat was one of the four teams added to the Pro Kabaddi League for the fifth season in 2017. With the addition of Gujarat, Haryana Steelers, Up Yoddha and Tamil Thalaivas, the total number of teams in PKL went up to 12. But The Giants have been the most successful of the four new teams, making it to the final in both 2017 and 2018. After U Mumba and Patna Pirates, they became the third team to play two consecutive finals.

GFG is owned by the Ahmedabad-basedAdani Group. The multinational company is known for real estate, financial services, defense, and aerospace. But of late they have turned their attention to the Sports industry with the investment in the Kabaddi team.

In 2016, Adani Group launched an initiative,Garv Haiin order to prepare and support athletes for Rio Olympics. The same initiative has been re-launched for the upcoming 2020 Olympics.

FRU2go, a fruit juice brand was the teams title sponsor last year and is likely to continue for the upcoming season. Famous Indian Sportswear brandShiv Nareshwill be GFGs kit manufactures, just like the past two seasons.

Manpreet Singh has been GFGs head coach since the teams very first season and will continue to lead the team. The 2017 season was Singhs first season as a coach but with his defensive organization, he quickly made a name for himself. He has played an integral role in Gujarats two consecutive final appearances.

Singh is famous amongst the squad for his motivational team talks and tactical advice. The former Pro Kabaddi League winner with Patna Pirates in the third season is also known for trusting young players in the team.

In their first two seasons, Gujarat Fortune Giants have been simply exceptional. The team finished at the top of Zone A in both seasons and made it to the final of the tournament. But luck has not been on their side in both the finals, as they finished runner-ups both times.

GFG started their debut season with a bang, finishing at the top of Zone A. The team won 15 of 22 games in the group stages and lost just 4, least by any of the twelve teams. Gujarat ended up with 87 points at the end of the group stages and walked into the Qualifier 1 in style.

In their very first playoff game, Gujarat absolutely crushedBengal Warriors42-17 to make it to the final of the 2017 Pro Kabaddi League. But two-time defending champions and aiming for the hat-trick,Patna Pirateswere too much to handle for the newcomers in the final. The Pirates defeated Gurajat 55-38 in the one-sided final. But it was a great debut season for Gujarat Fortune Giants, who were exceptional throughout the tournament.

The Ahmedabad-based team improved on their group stage performances from the last season, winning 17 of the 22 games. It was more than any other team in the league while their 3 defeats were the least in the league as well. GFG finished the group stage with 93 points, 117 score difference and once again at the top of Zone A.

Despite being in an exceptional form in the group stage, Gujarat lost the first qualifier 29-41 againstBengaluru Bulls. But thanks to their first place finish in Zone A, the Giants had one more shot at the final. And they took it with both hands, defeating UP Yoddha 38-31 in the second qualifier.

But the story from the last season continued for Gujarat Fortune Giants as they lost their second consecutive final. In the repeat of Qualifier 1, Bengaluru Bulls won 38-33 to claim the title, leaving Gujarat Fortune Giants with the second consecutive runner-up finish.

Sachin was Gujarats best raider 190 raid-points in 23 matches. Parvesh Bhainswal, with his 86 tackle points was the teams best and leagues second best defender in the sixth season.

Gujarat retained their last seasons best raider Sachin and defender Sunil Kumar for the seventh season. Along with these two elite players, The Giants also retained two young players Lalit Chaudhary and Rohit Gulia.

Gujarat used their Final Bid Match (FBM) card to bring back their last seasons best defender Parvesh Bhainswal for ₹75 lakh, most expensive GFG player in the 2019 auction. Defender Rituraj Koravi was bought for ₹30.5 lakh.

Gujarat plays their home games at The Arena by TransStadia in Ahmedabad. The multi-purpose stadium has both outdoor and indoor stadiums and has the capacity of 4000 people for Pro Kabaddi League.

After two consecutive defeats in the final of the tournament, Gujarat Fortune Giants will be itching to get their hands on the trophy. But things wont be easy for the Ahmedabad-based franchise, with all twelve teams now playing in the double round robin format instead of Zonal system.

Gujarat will play their first game of the seventh season against the same team they lost the last years final to Bengaluru Bulls on 21stJuly. The Ahmedabad phase of the tournament will be played from 10thAugust to 16thAugust.

I might be a Mechanical Engineer on the paper, but I was a Sports enthusiast since childhood, screaming at the TV watching cricket at the age of 4. Not much excites me other than sports unless its free pizza. I can watch literally anything remotely related to sports; Cricket, Football, Tennis, F1, Hockey, Athletics, Chess, you name it! And I love to write too, so at the time Im not watching sports, Im writing about it. Or eating pizzas, of course.
