Fortune Magazine recently released its 2018 Fortune 500 rankings. Eleven Missouri-based companies were included in this years Fortune 500 list. Express Scripts came in at Rank 25 and is the highest ranked Missouri company among Fortune 500 companies with revenues of $100.0 billion. Missouri companies that experienced rank increases from the previous year include: Centene, Monsanto, Reinsurance Group of America, Edward Jones, Olin, and Peabody Energy. Peabody Energy had the largest increase climbing 42 spots from 533 to 491 in the rankings.

Most of Missouris Fortune 500 companies are based in the St. Louis area. OReilly Automotive is headquartered in Springfield. Combined revenues for these eleven companies are up by nearly $13.7 billion over last year. Profits for 2017 increased a little over $3.9 billion. Missouris eleven Fortune 500 companies employed over 297,300 people, of which 27,000 are Missouri residents and were paid roughly $4 billion in wages according to the 2017 analysis of Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages program data.

The top five U.S. companies are Wal-Mart Stores ($500.3 billion), Exxon Mobil ($244.3 billion), Berkshire Hathaway ($242.1 billion), Apple ($229.2 billion), and UnitedHealth Group ($201.1 billion). Exxon Mobile, Berkshire Hathaway, and Apple each switched places from the previous year: Exxon Mobile climbed two ranks, Berkshire Hathaway dropped one rank, and Apple dropped one rank. Among the Top Ten, climbed four ranks (from 12 to 8) gaining $41.8 billion over the past year.

The map below illustrates the number of Fortune 500 companies located in each state. At the national level, New York currently has the most at 58 company headquarters. California is home to 49 Fortune 500 company headquarters and Texas is home to 48. Taking a closer look at Missouris neighboring states, Illinois tops out at 37 Fortune 500 headquarters, followed by Tennessee with 12.
