Fortune Academy is a small private school in Indianapolis for 1st to 12th graders who have dyslexia and other language processing differences. The Events and Volunteer Coordinator works with volunteers to organize fundraisers, the annual campaign, parent education programs, and school events such as graduation.

On the Loop in the historic Fort Benjamin Harrison area of Indianapolis is a repurposed brick building an inviting space where young people, grades 1-12, with learning differences come every day to learn skills that will enable them to succeed in their work and personal lives as productive citizens.

Due to its regional reputation for success with students and to its national ranking of 18th from the Special Education Guide of 2015, many educators look to Fortune Academy ( as a model. Currently, Fortune Academy is the only school in Indiana to provide a certification program in the Orton-Gillingham (O-G) approach to language learning. And O-G is only part of the skill set that Fortune teachers share with others who want to create safe and productive learning communities in which students with learning differences excel. The Fortune Academy vision is to serve a growing number of students and the broader community side-by-side:

1.providing support services to students with learning differences and to their families.

2.providing continuing education in learning differences for education professionals.

3.partnering with organizations with similar missions to expand and deepen the ability to serve.

A. Reports to the Director of Development (DOD) for these Functions

1. Coordinates the Major Fundraiser: The Annual Celebration with Auction

2. Coordinates all other Fundraisers (including but not limited to restaurant nights out, jewelry sales, student art sales, script sales)

3. Coordinates the Annual Gifts Program (to raise operational support)

4. Secures Sponsorships to Underwrite Specific Program Requests (dramatic performances, arts programs, sports and recreations, educational partnerships linked to learning labs)

5. Produces all Public Relations Materials concerning Fundraisers.

6. Maintains an Individual Contributor Data Base ( all Event Participants and Annual Givers)

7. Supports the DOD with Research and Grant Writing assignments as time permits

B. Reports to the Head of School for these Functions

1. Coordinates the Parent/Teacher Organization

2. Coordinates All Parent Volunteer Program and Tracks Talents and Hours

4. Coordinates School Events for Students and Teachers such as Opening of School Social, recognition events, celebrations, prom and graduation.

5. Produces the Mighty Oaks News Letter and other communications within the Fortune Academy family.

Qualifications: 5 years in fundraising role with the last 2 years in a non-clerical role

Bachelors Degree in Business, Non-Profit Management, Communications or the Humanities

Portfolio of 2 or more major events coordinated

Staging major events with a consistent theme from invitation to room dcor

Supporting the use of multimedia technologies for presentations

Recruiting, training and managing volunteers

Coordinating logistics with on and offsite facilities managers, catering, and audio-visual support

Strong oral and written communication skills

Willing to learn the professional vocabulary of education and learning differences

Engaging public speaking skills with children and parent-volunteer audiences

Intermediate skills in word processing, excel, power point, and computer graphics

Ability to use databases and to format data tables for research

Ability to use project management software
